Inclusivity

As adherents to Maria Montessori's philosophy, we believe children are the hope and promise for a better future. We uphold her conviction that creating a more peaceful, fair, and just world lies in the hands of today's and tomorrow's children.

As educators, we realize the importance of our spiritual preparation in shaping the child's experience. To honor and serve children genuinely, we acknowledge that those educated in a culture influenced by white supremacy and dominance must consistently work towards identifying, confronting, and dismantling our biases and ingrained racism.

By engaging in personal and collective reflection, education, and action, we aim to improve our service to children of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, embrace diversity, and understand how white supremacy and dominance hinder us all from reaching our full potential.

As educators, we strive to:

  • Understand our own biases and privileges

  • Recognize, respect, and celebrate the diversity among our students, staff, and families

  • Invite families to share their unique cultures, celebrations, and traditions

  • Develop and implement a strategic plan to transform our school into an antiracist organization

Gender Inclusivity

As Montessorians, we take a stand to be a supportive environment for gender-expansive children to live authentically in our classroom communities, including transgender and non-binary children. All children share their chosen names and gender pronouns. Students present themselves however best reflects their affirmed gender, no matter where they are on their gender journey. Bathrooms at Catskill Montessori are gender-inclusive.

As educators, we:

  • Recognize that gender impacts all students

  • Interrupt binary notions of gender

  • Acknowledge and account for gender diversity

  • Teach and model empathy and respect through allyship

Building Community

Our school welcomes and supports all families, including BIPOC, multicultural, biracial, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender-diverse, and queer-identified parents, solo parents, multiple parents, and other diverse family structures.

Our Story

Catskill Montessori School is a unique institution that harmoniously blends the principles of Montessori education with a deep-rooted commitment to permaculture, which we call ‘Earth Stewards.’ "Permaculture" is a term introduced by non-indigenous peoples, which reflects the ecological understanding and traditions initially embodied by Indigenous communities in their respective regions. We recognize that this concept can be utilized to contribute to the erasure of these Indigenous identities and their original practices.

We opened our doors in September 2020 with a single early childhood 3-to-6-year-old class and one lower elementary 6-to-9-year-old class held in a beautifully restored 1700s barn. Four short years later, our school has blossomed, serving toddlers through 6th grade across five authentic Montessori classroom communities. Our campus now spans two meticulously converted barns and a charming stone farmhouse, each filled with history and character. Our next growth phase includes a secondary program for ages 12-18.

Parallel to our educational expansion, our farm has thrived and grown. The land now supports a working 3000 square foot greenhouse, fruit orchards, a traditional Indigenous Three Sisters Garden, and a budding Food Forest. Our outdoor and forest classrooms are home to various farm animals—Nigerian dwarf goats, hens, and ducks—all inhabiting a landscape with woods, trails, creeks, and rivers.

The soul of our school resides not only within classrooms but also in the rich history and natural beauty of our surroundings. The repurposed Dutch and Gambrel barns and the 1792 Farmhouse now nurture young minds. Restoration work has breathed new life into these historic structures, preserving their beauty while integrating 21st-century energy-efficient upgrades.

Our school sits humbly on lands that have been inspiring imaginations for millennia. The Mahicannituck River, once the life source for the Indigenous people known as the host tribes, graces this land. Burget Creek, a river tributary, meanders through the southeastern tip of our property. Against the backdrop of the majestic Catskill Mountains to the west, it's hard not to feel a profound sense of awe and privilege to be the current stewards of this land.

Earth Stewards

Earth care, people care, and fair share are permaculture ethics that guide Catskill Montessori School's approach to being a part of the land. Students learn to observe and work in cooperation with nature and to honor those skills as the legacy and heritage of Indigenous people all over our planet.

“The future of our planet depends on a change of consciousness, in which the people and the resources of the natural world are no longer taken for granted and exploited without considering long term impacts. Supporting children from early childhood to develop a sensitive, compassionate and cooperative relationship with each other and the natural world is a crucial step in generating this new consciousness.”

Land
Acknowledgement

We want to acknowledge that Catskill Montessori School is on the ancestral homelands of the Haudenosaunee, Mahican, Lenape, and other Algonquin peoples. We recognize the continued relationship with these lands and express our most profound respect and gratitude for our Indigenous neighbors, the stewards of this land on which we learn and grow.

We acknowledge the painful history of forced removal and broken treaties and honor the many diverse Indigenous peoples still connected to this land. We also recognize the roles that settler colonialism and cultural erasure have played in shaping our understanding of the world.

In recognizing these communities, we honor their legacy, lives, and descendants. We also acknowledge the enduring presence and resilience of the Haudenosaunee, Mahican, Lenape, and other Algonquin peoples in the face of adversity. Having been removed from their homeland, these nations now call parts of Wisconsin, Oklahoma, and Canada home.

Catskill Montessori School is committed to an ongoing process of learning and acknowledging respectful relationships and supporting Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination. Let this acknowledgment demonstrate a commitment to dismantling settler colonialism's lasting legacies.

We stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples' struggles for recognition, justice, and respect. We are grateful for their stewardship of the earth and resilience in preserving the land for generations. We respect their cultural practices, spirituality, stewardship, and intrinsic connection to the land.

Catskill Montessori School understands that this acknowledgment is one step in unmasking systems of oppression and decolonizing a settler colonial society, and we pledge to continue recognizing and rectifying these injustices.
